The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s announcement that Thomas Dausgaard is its next Chief Conductor has been met with cheers from the Classical press and audiences.
Kate Molleson, in The Herald (Scotland), writes, “This is an intriguing, intelligent and potentially very exciting appointment…Although Dausgaard is respected for his interpretations of core symphonic repertoire, he is more often associated as a champion of lesser-known Scandinavian voices. And that means his appointment is a commitment to the kind of off-piste programming that is increasingly becoming the orchestra’s USP. From the slick Euro-avant-gardism of Pintscher to the earthier experimentalism of Volkov via the odd vintage obscurity from regular guest conductor Martyn Brabbins, the BBCSSO now plays rare and contemporary orchestral music as well as any orchestra in the world.”
Tom Service, writing in The Guardian says, “This is good news. Dausgaard’s inventive programming, his committed, passionate and convincing advocacy of new music (listen to his recordings of his fellow Dane Per Nørgård with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra) and his imagination in rethinking the core repertoire make him an exciting fit for the BBCSSO.”
