Seattle Symphony and Thomas Dausgaard rebroadcast an all-Brahms program featuring Seattle-favorite Garrick Ohlsson performing finale of Brahms’ First Piano Concerto
The Seattle Symphony presents Dausgaard Conducts Brahms Featuring Garrick Ohlsson as this week’s concert rebroadcast on April 16, 18 and 19. Conducted by Music Director Thomas Dausgaard, the program includes Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 1 and Symphony No. 2: Allegro con spirit, performed live on January 25, 2018. In the Seattle Symphony’s original January 25, 2018 performance of Hungarian Dance No. 1 and Symphony No. 2, The Seattle Times reported that Dausgaard led “the entire program without a score, sustained a level of intensely focused collaboration with the players that resulted in a consistently animated evening of music-making and left no room for a sense of the routine to tarnish its pleasures”
Bringing the broadcast to a close is local favorite Garrick Ohlsson playing Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1: Rondo: Allegro non troppo in a concert performed on April 4, 2019 at Benaroya Hall. The veteran pianist is well-regarded for his approach to the Romantic repertoire and brings the finale’s tremendous energy and flowing melodies to fruition.
“It’s one of my favorite works,” shares Garrick Ohlsson. “It’s a great, heroic piano and orchestra piece — really piano and orchestra piece, not just a solo concerto. It’s very symphonic in scale and it’s a journey from darkness to light. From great tragedy to true cathartic joy. Very much modeled on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which was a favorite of Brahms, of course. It’s a fabulous, beautiful piece.”
